Sparked Rural & Remote Health Equity Roundtable (Darwin – July 2024)
The Sparked team travelled to Darwin to meet with members of the rural and remote health community. Over 80 people from across Australia gathered for this important roundtable.
As a group, we heard different perspectives, discussed the barriers and opportunities for data standardisation, and worked to better understand Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and Social and Emotional Wellbeing (SEWB) in a rural and remote context.
The discussions focussed on the information and data needed to support culturally safe and appropriate information exchange in rural and remote Australia. We aim to ensure that Sparked delivers on the “Core of the Core” data requirements for all Australians, with a strong health equity focus.
Attendee organisations
We were lucky to welcome attendees representing jurisdictions, clinicians, government, consumers, vendors, academic and research organisations, healthcare service providers, and community controlled health organisations.

Next steps
So, what’s next? What are we doing with what we learnt?
The outputs from the workshops will inform the requirements for the Australian Core Data for Interoperability (AUCDI) Release 2 and help ensure a strong equity focus.
We asked attendees at the Roundtable and the Clinical Design Group Workshops held in May to prioritise and vote for the data groups they believe are most important for AUCDI R2. We will use these results to identify the prioritised list of data elements for AUCDI R2 and what data elements should be added to the backlog. The results from both workshops are published on the Sparked website.
This is an iterative exercise and is one of many opportunities to participate in the conversation. We will continue to engage with the rural and remote and First Nations communities and discuss these issues in the Clinical Design Group meetings.
We are an open and transparent community, and we encourage anyone to register to be part of the Sparked community in any capacity that suits them! Community members can opt to receive general program updates or participate in and receive updates on our design groups.
