Meet the Sparked Technical Co-Chairs: Marvin Malcolm

Meet Marvin Malcolm – Lead Architect at Telstra Health, and AU Core Technical Design Group Co-Chair.
Marvin currently works as an architect at Telstra Health, focusing on integrated solutions. As an AU Core Technical Design co-chair, Marvin helps facilitate the TDG in their mission to define the requirements and specifications to support interoperability among clinical and non-clinical systems in Australia. With a wealth of knowledge and experience in his field, Sparked are very grateful to have Marvin within the community.
We spoke to Marvin about his involvement with Sparked, here is what he had to say!
🤔 What is your working background?
I’m an architect with a focus on integrated solutions.
🤔 How did you become involved with Sparked?
Given my involvement with interoperability solutions within Telstra Health it was a natural extension to work with the broader community to develop interoperability standards across the broader healthcare industry.
🤔 What is your role within Sparked?
I’m one of the co-chairs on the AU Core Technical Design Group.
🤔 What does Sparked mean to you?
An opportunity to make a real difference to healthcare in Australia.
🤔 What is something that you hope to achieve within the Sparked program?
Make interoperability a reality in the Australian healthcare ecosystem, which will in turn, assist providers in their quest to deliver better outcomes for patients/consumers.
🤔 How is the Sparked program different to projects you’ve been involved in before?
The community involvement has brought an intensity to our efforts around interoperability that I doubt was there previously. Also the collaboration between healthcare providers, vendors and importantly government and other interested agencies, has meant there is a greater chance of success. Having government involved is key to ensuring any required supporting legislative changes are highlighted and placed on the agenda for parliament.
🤔 What’s been your favourite part of working within the Sparked team?
Working with, and getting to know the community, and subsequently realising they are equally as passionate about solving the interoperability challenge as I am.
🤔 What would you tell someone wanting to learn more about the Sparked project?
Definitely get involved. The community is doing something really special right now and you have an opportunity to be part of it and help shape how we improve patient care here in Australia. The more organisations that are involved, the more likely we’ll achieve our goals.
🤔 How will the goals and outcomes of the Sparked Program impact your field/industry/profession?
They are directly related and well aligned. The work that Sparked is doing is influencing how I design solutions today within my own organisation.
🤔 What’s your favourite Sparked/FHIR pun?
Girls on FHIR! Has always struck me as we have a group of fantastic female leaders involved and helping to drive this great initiative.
