Sparked Bright Sparks: Janette Gogler

Meet Janette Gogler – Deputy Chief Nursing and Midwifery Information Officer at Monash Health
Janette joins Sparked with a wealth of clinical experience, working as a Registered Nurse and health informatician for several decades, with her current role as Deputy Chief Nursing Information Officer at Monash Health. Janette is currently leading work on terminology and coding nursing data with the Australian College of Nursing, leading her to discovering Sparked and she has since immersed herself within the community, offering her expert input and working as an integral part of the team.
We spoke to Janette about her involvement in the Sparked Community, here’s what she had to say!
❓What is your background?
Registered Nurse and health informatician of several decades
❓ How did you first hear about Sparked and what made you want to become involved?
I heard from Dr Heather Leslie that this work was underway. I expressed an interest and she said I definitely should be in the room considering the work I am leading with the Aust. College of Nursing on terminology and coding nursing data
❓ What do you see as the best outcomes that Sparked has delivered or is working towards?
The multidisciplinary approach to identifying the data to be shared. Having the technical team develop the specifications and testing. Can’t wait for it to happen.
❓ How is Sparked different to projects you’ve been involved in before?
I haven’t worked in cross dimensional data sharing activity at this scale before.
❓ What is something you’ve learnt from being part of the Sparked community?
Much of the clinical data /information requirements are homogenous across disciplines/professions and settings. Representing the nursing voice was really important as nurses contribute a significant volume of data in clinical records and needs to be shared in the messaging standards.
❓ Can you share one of your favourite or memorable moments from participating in Sparked?
Oh the butchers paper and the dots .. labelling the high need to later need; all that close conversation and disagreements and prioritising. I was out of the room for the orange sox… !
❓ What excites you most about the future with Sparked?
Going live - our nation deserves it.
❓ What’s something unexpected that you’ve learnt/been a part of/connected with through Sparked?
Listening to the consumers in the room and getting a different perspective than just one from clinicians . we can’t assume we have always catered for consumers especially the frequent flyers.
❓ How would you explain Sparked to someone not yet involved?
A national activity that identifies required data for sharing between systems across the nation using health messaging standards that all vendors and developers can implement. Which will enable clinicians and patients to have data at point of care.
❓ What piece of advice would you share to someone who may not yet be a part of Sparked?
Convince your employer/association or college to get involved. Its so important for professions and groups to be engaged and contribute and have a voice.
❓ If you had to describe Sparked in three words, what would they be?
cascading clinical data
❓ If Sparked had a theme song, what would it be?
SAVE ME https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6vSf0cA9qY its saving the consumer from repeating their story.. its saving the clinicians from looking for information. And I LOVE the SAX goes well with orange sox https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJGJu3lqpGM with the lyrics
